About The Flowers
Wollam Gardens is a cut flower farm located 60 miles west of Washington D.C., in the small town of Jeffersonton, Virginia. We grow a variety of unique perennials, annuals, trees, and shrubs on our 11 acres. Our flowers supply designers, specialty florists, locally-focused retailers, and farmers’ markets in the D.C. area. We offer custom floral design for weddings and special events. It’s a joy to create with the beautiful things that surround us! Come visit! We’ve hosted weddings, workshops, festivals, yoga, and educational programs in our gorgeous pavilion. Bring a picnic, wander the lush rows of peonies, viburnum, or hydrangeas, and connect with our team. Every season brings something new to experience!
Cut & Find Your Own Flowers at Wollam Gardens
Dear Flower Fans –
Welcome to Wollam Gardens and our 11 acres of blooms and bushes, fields, hoop houses and hills of flowers! We are excited to host you.
Here’s how it works: First, enter the gift shop and find a map of Wollam Gardens on the desk near the computer. Second, walk out to the Flower Station (the covered area next to the Greenhouse where there are lots of tables). If you don’t have your own clippers you may borrow a pair of ours; they are in a gray round container. (Please don’t lose them and bring them back!) You’ll also need to find rubber bands, which you can put around your wrist; they are in another gray round container. And you’ll need a bucket with some water in it – about a third full is fine, and the sink is easy to see. If you need help with any of this, just ask!
Next, ask a staffer where you can go to cut, and for tips about the basics of how to cut. The staffer will walk out with you and demonstrate proper technique for harvesting. (Hint: the trick to harvesting is to make clean cuts and not to take too much from any one plant or area.) Once you have a bundle of flowers – anywhere from 5 to 10 stems -- you can rubber band them. Ask the staffer to show you good technique for securing your stems with a rubber band. Then, you put them in the bucket so the flowers stay hydrated.
When you’re done, go back to the Flower Station and count your stems, then ask the staffer to give you the total amount, and you can either pay in the gift shop, or use your phone and find us on Venmo at @aflowerdestination
That’s it! We are SO GLAD to have you come.
